Using Access equipment in the workplace is perfectly acceptable as long as the equipment has been correctly specified, the risks assessed and users are given the necessary training to ensure that they are competent to carry out the tasks required.

Always select the right equipment for the job. Check the type of product, the working height required and the maximum safe working load and always follow the manufacturer’s safety and operating instructions. Work at Height Regulations (WAHR)

The Work at Height Regulations came into force in April 2005. The Regulations apply to all work at
height where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury.

The regulations place a duty on employers, the self-employed, and any person that controls the work of others (for example facilities managers or building owners who may contract others to work at height).

Duty holders must ensure:

• All work at height is properly planned and organised
• Those involved in work at height are competent
• The risks from work at height are assessed and appropriate work equipment is selected and
used
• The risks from fragile surfaces are properly controlled; and Equipment for work at height is

Reducing Falls from Height

Very often working at height is a necessity, but last year 45 workers died and 3750 were seriously injured following a fall from height. Help to reduce falls from height in your workplace by:

  • Carry out and follow risk assessments - take steps to avoid, prevent or reduce risks
  • Plan in advance to work at height
  • Ensure all persons working at height are competent
